Are we truly present at worship? Can we focus away from the world in adoration of Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
A devotion I read talked about our worship of God needing to be done from our spirits, our true selves. This week’s hymn asks God’s Spirit to give our souls divine truth, to awaken our spirits, to clear our sights, and to reign in our consciences.
Scripture:
John 4:23-24 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.
Corinthians 2:13 And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language
Song: “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” – Words by Samuel Longfellow (1864) and Music adapted from Orlando Gibbons (1623)
- Holy Spirit, Truth divine,
Dawn upon this soul of mine;
Word of God and inward light
Wake my spirit, clear my sight. - Holy Spirit, Love divine,
Glow within this heart of mine;
Kindle every high desire;
Perish self in Thy pure fire. - Holy Spirit, Pow’r divine,
Fill and nerve this will of mine;
Grant that I may strongly live,
Bravely bear, and nobly strive. - Holy Spirit, Right divine,
King within my conscience reign;
Be my Lord, and I shall be
Firmly bound, forever free. - Holy Spirit, Peace divine,
Still this restless heart of mine;
Speak to calm this tossing sea,
Stayed in Thy tranquility. - Holy Spirit, Joy divine,
Gladden Thou this heart of mine;
In the desert ways I sing,
“Spring, O Well, forever spring.”
