Come, Holy Spirit, be Present in Our Lives : #14

On the last Sunday of this music of Pentecost series, let us praise God for the blessing of His Holy Spirit.  Chant or meditate with the beautiful “Veni Sancte Spiritus” that says, “Come, Holy Spirit, send forth the heavenly radiance of your light.” Pray that God’s Holy Spirit will be with us all!

Scripture:

Titus 3:5 He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but because of His own pity and mercy, by cleansing of the new birth and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the presence and fellowship in the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Song: “Veni Sancte Spiritus” – Fra Slavko Barbaric – Medjugorje

Veni Sancte Spiritus (Repeated throughout)

Verses:

Come holy Spirit, from heaven shine forth with your glorious light. Veni Sancte Spiritus

Come, Father of the poor, come, generous Spirit, come, light of our hearts. Veni Sancte Spiritus

Come from the four winds, O Spirit, come breath of God; disperse the shadows over us
renew and strengthen your people. Veni Sancte Spiritus

Father of the poor, come to our poverty. Shower upon us the seven gifts of your grace. Be
the light of our lives. O come. Veni Sancte Spiritus

You are our only comforter, Peace of the soul. In the heat you shade us; in our labor you
refresh us, and in trouble you are our strength. Veni Sancte Spiritus

Kindle in our hearts the flame of your love that in the darkness of the world it may glow and reach to all forever. Veni Sancte Spiritus

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit: #13

What can happen to us if we are filled with the Holy Spirit? Will we experience a change if God’s Holy Spirit lives in us? The Bible says yes and tells us about the fruit of the Spirit that can be ours. Today’s song asks the Holy Spirit to live in us and take control.

Scripture:

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 Gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard and keep the precious and excellently adapted [Truth] which has been entrusted [to you], by the Holy Spirit Who makes His home in us.

Song:  “Welcome Holy Spirit” written by Sandrene Daniel-Joel

Sing twice:                                                                                                                                Welcome Holy Spirit,                                                                                                                            We are in Your Presence,                                                                                                                          Fill us with Your power,                                                                                                                          Live inside of me.

Sing twice:                                                                                                                                Welcome Holy Spirit,                                                                                                                            We are in Your Presence,                                                                                                                          Fill us with Your power,                                                                                                                          Live inside of me.

Filled with the Holy Spirit: #12

There are many ways to imagine and ask for the Holy Spirit to be present in our lives. We may ask to be breathed on, filled up, rained on, or surrounded by God’s Spirit. Today’s song speaks of the Lord pouring His Spirit out on us so we can be more like Jesus.

Scripture:

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage.

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.

Song: “Pour Out Your Spirit, Lord” – Written by Evan Wickham

Verse (2 times): Pour Out Your Spirit, Lord                                                                                                         Pour Out Your Spirit, Lord                                                                                                                            I want to be like Jesus                                                                                                                                    I want to be like Jesus

Chorus: King of glory, Lord of all                                                                                                                   Your face I seek                                                                                                                                        Your name I call                                                                                                                                  Jesus, Jesus, Jesus                                                                                                                                                 You are holy, You are pure                                                                                                                  Your love is great                                                                                                                          And Your mercy endures                                                                                                                         Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

Ask for His Holy Spirit: #11

Knowing that God has sent a helper for us is so wonderful. How often do we actually admit our need or ask for His Spirit to be with us? The song today speaks of that need.

Scripture:

Luke 11:13 If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!

Ephesians 3:16 May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the Spirit.

Song:  “Come Holy Spirit, I need You” by Israel Houghton

Come Holy Spirit, I need you,
Come in thine own gentle way,
Come as the rest to the weary,
Come fill me with joy today.

Come Holy spirit, I need you,
Come Holy Spirit, I pray,
Come in thy strengh and thy power,
Come in thine own gentle way.

Come like the sping in the desert,
Come to this winner of souls,
Oh, let thy sweet healing power,
Touch me and make me whole.

Come Holy Spirit, I need thee,
Come Holy spirit, I pray,
Come with thy strengh and thy power,
Come in thine own gentle way.

Come Holy Spirit I need you,
Come in thine own gentle way,
Come as the rest to the weary,
Come fill me with joy today.

Come Holy spirit I need you,
Come Holy Spirit I pray,
Come in thy strengh and thy power, Come in thy own
gentle way, come in thy own gentle way.

The Spirit Who is from God: #10

Not only is the Holy Spirit here to comfort us but also to help us appreciate and use (for good) all of the gifts our Father bestows on us. In this way we are truly blessed. The song today requests that the Holy Spirit make our lives what they ought to be and use us so that others might see God’s presence in our lives.

Scripture:

1Corinthians 2:12  Now we have not received the spirit [that belongs to] the world, but the Spirit Who is from God,  that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts bestowed on us by God.

1Corinthians 12:7-9, 11  7.But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for good and profit. 8.To one is given in and through the Spirit a message of wisdom, and to another a word of knowledge and understanding according to the same Spirit; 9. To another faith by the same Spirit, to another the extraordinary powers of healing by the one Spirit;…11. All these [gifts, achievements, abilities] are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same Spirit, Who apportions to each person individually as He chooses.

Song:  “Holy Spirit Flow Through Me” – Written by Walt Mills, 1973

Holy Spirit, flow through me, Holy Spirit, flow through me,                                                    And make my life what it ought to be; Holy Spirit, flow through me.

Holy Spirit, rest on me, Holy Spirit, rest on me,                                                                            And use me, Lord to win the lost to Thee; Holy Spirit, rest on me.

Holy Spirit, flow out from me, Holy Spirit, flow out from me,                                            That others, Lord may see You in me; Holy Spirit, flow out from me.                                   Holy Spirit, flow out from me.

The great Comforter, the Holy Spirit: #9

May the Lord be with us all and be our great Comforter. Today’s hymn reminds us that after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven He sent His children the Holy Spirit, “from heaven, the Father’s promise given.” The lyrics say, “Wherever human hearts and human woes abound …..The Comforter has come!”

Scripture:

John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.

Romans 8:26 So too the Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.

Song:  “The Comforter Has Come” – Music by William J. Kirkpatrick and Words by Frank Bottome, pub. 1890.

  1. Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found,
    Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;
    Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound:
    The Comforter has come!

    • Refrain:
      The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come!
      The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n;
      Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found—
      The Comforter has come!
  2. The long, long night is past, the morning breaks at last,
    And hushed the dreadful wail and fury of the blast,
    As o’er the golden hills the day advances fast!
    The Comforter has come!
  3. Lo, the great King of kings, with healing in His wings,
    To every captive soul a full deliv’rance brings;
    And through the vacant cells the song of triumph rings;
    The Comforter has come!
  4. O boundless love divine! How shall this tongue of mine
    To wond’ring mortals tell the matchless grace divine—
    That I, a child of hell, should in His image shine!
    The Comforter has come!
  5. Sing till the echoes fly above the vaulted sky,
    And all the saints above to all below reply,
    In strains of endless love, the song that ne’er will die:
    The Comforter has come!

God’s Holy Spirit is Calling and Free: #8

In a world filled with criticism, competition, and harshness, isn’t it a total gift from God to know that his caring, loving, calming, gentle Spirit is there for us? In the hymn for today, God’s Spirit is described as calling and free. The song reminds us that the Holy Spirit can stir us, open our eyes, and fill us with boldness in our faith.

Scripture:

Acts 2:17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 7:51 You stubborn and stiff-necked people, still heathen and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are always actively resisting the Holy Spirit. As your forefathers, so you!

Song:  “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness” – Words and music by James K. Manley, 1978

Chorus: Spirit, spirit of gentleness.
Blow through the wilderness, calling and free.
Spirit, spirit of restlessness. Stir me from placidness.
Wind, wind on the sea.

1. You moved on the waters, You called to the deep,
Then You coaxed up the mountains. From the valley of sleep,
And over the eons You called to each thing,
“A wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.” Repeat Chorus

2. You swept through the dessert, You stung with the sand,
And You gifted your people With a law and a land,
And when they were blinded With their idols and lies,
Then You spoke through Your prophets To open their eyes. Repeat Chorus

3. You sang in a stable, You cried from a hill,
Then You whispered in silence When the whole world was still,
And down in the city You called once again
When You blew through Your people On the rush of the wind. Repeat Chorus

4. You call from tomorrow, You break ancient schemes,
From the bondage of sorrow The captives dream dreams;
Our women see visions, Our men clear their eyes.
With bold new decisions Your people arise. Repeat Chorus

Adoration of Father, Son and Holy Spirit: #7

Are we truly present at worship? Can we focus away from the world in adoration of Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

A devotion I read talked about our worship of God needing to be done from our spirits, our true selves. This week’s hymn asks God’s Spirit to give our souls divine truth, to awaken our spirits, to clear our sights, and to reign in our consciences.

Scripture:

John 4:23-24 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Corinthians 2:13  And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language

Song:  “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” – Words by Samuel Longfellow (1864) and Music adapted from Orlando Gibbons (1623)

  1. Holy Spirit, Truth divine,
    Dawn upon this soul of mine;
    Word of God and inward light
    Wake my spirit, clear my sight.
  2. Holy Spirit, Love divine,
    Glow within this heart of mine;
    Kindle every high desire;
    Perish self in Thy pure fire.
  3. Holy Spirit, Pow’r divine,
    Fill and nerve this will of mine;
    Grant that I may strongly live,
    Bravely bear, and nobly strive.
  4. Holy Spirit, Right divine,
    King within my conscience reign;
    Be my Lord, and I shall be
    Firmly bound, forever free.
  5. Holy Spirit, Peace divine,
    Still this restless heart of mine;
    Speak to calm this tossing sea,
    Stayed in Thy tranquility.
  6. Holy Spirit, Joy divine,
    Gladden Thou this heart of mine;
    In the desert ways I sing,
    “Spring, O Well, forever spring.”
