May the Lord be with us all and be our great Comforter. Today’s hymn reminds us that after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven He sent His children the Holy Spirit, “from heaven, the Father’s promise given.” The lyrics say, “Wherever human hearts and human woes abound …..The Comforter has come!”
Scripture:
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.
Romans 8:26 So too the Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.
Song: “The Comforter Has Come” – Music by William J. Kirkpatrick and Words by Frank Bottome, pub. 1890.
- Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found,
Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;
Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound:
The Comforter has come!- Refrain:
The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come!
The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n;
Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found—
The Comforter has come!
- Refrain:
- The long, long night is past, the morning breaks at last,
And hushed the dreadful wail and fury of the blast,
As o’er the golden hills the day advances fast!
The Comforter has come! - Lo, the great King of kings, with healing in His wings,
To every captive soul a full deliv’rance brings;
And through the vacant cells the song of triumph rings;
The Comforter has come! - O boundless love divine! How shall this tongue of mine
To wond’ring mortals tell the matchless grace divine—
That I, a child of hell, should in His image shine!
The Comforter has come! - Sing till the echoes fly above the vaulted sky,
And all the saints above to all below reply,
In strains of endless love, the song that ne’er will die:
The Comforter has come!
