“A Flame in My Heart – Scripture, Thought and Song for Advent” – Dec. 1

Advent is a time to help us prepare to accept and appreciate God’s great gifts.    Such as:                                                                                                                                             All His Creation, especially the mystery of our being – our heart, mind, and soul             His grace, love, forgiveness, and Holy Spirit to help us stay strong in our belief              His Word and its truth and power for our lives                                                                   Jesus, His Son, our Savior, with His total sacrifice for our salvation

The starting point for this collection of material is the lighting of the candle on the First Sunday of Advent. The five Advent candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world.  I recommend listening to the song, reading the Scripture verses and accompanying thoughts, thinking of and/or sharing your response and then playing the song again and singing along, if you like. I hope that with each day you find a lyric, a verse or an idea to take with you to Christmas and help you carry the flame of God’s love and presence along the way.

The First Week in Advent – Thinking about God and His Promises

Sunday: Listen to the Song –  I’m Lighting a Candle – Verse 1                                              Purple – Prophecy Candle – Hope                                                                                                    I am lighting one candle for my Lord. (Repeat line)                                                      Thinking of the promises of old. Thinking of the prophesy foretold.                                 Now a flame is burning for my Lord. Now my heart is burning for His presence.           Now a flame is burning for my Lord.                                                                            Scripture – Isaiah 7:14    Jeremiah 33:14-16    Micah 5:2                                           Thought – What is your faith goal during this Advent season?

“A Flame in My Heart – Scripture, Thought and Song for Advent” by Bonita Evans

The season is upon us!

December 1st is the first Sunday of Advent when I plan to re-post the introduction and first day for a musical experience entitled: “A Flame in My Heart”. Each day’s post from Dec. 1 to Christmas Eve includes a song, scripture references and a thought for discussion. It is my greatest hope that those interested will join the blog. In Malachi 3:16 it states that those who feared the Lord talked often to one another and the Lord listened, heard it, and saw it recorded it in a book of remembrance about those who thought on His name. I believe He also hears and remembers our reverent and worshipful thoughts and conversations. Please join me!

Your friend in Christ,

Bonita Evans

Redeem Your Whole Creation

During these stressful times, when our country is being expected to intervene in strife around the world, I think prayers for God’s help, guidance, and redemption are most needed. I pray for peace in the hearts of all the people of God’s earth.

Scripture passages:  Psalm 33:20-22, Isaiah 54:10, John 14:27, Philippians 4:6,7

The title for this blog was taken from the lyrics of the hymn, “O God of Every Nation”. The stanzas of this hymn can offer a song of prayer that is very befitting for this time. This link will take you to the music and words: www.oremus.org/hymnal/o/o175.html

Oh God of Every Nation” was written after two world wars, during the Cold War. This link will take you to a history of the hymn: http://gbod.s2.paramoreredd.com/lead-your-church/worship/resource/history-of-hymns-o-god-of-every-nation

The article at the above link also offers insight on the words of each stanza. Here are some excerpts:

Stanza 1: “. . . The poet realized that peace might only be wrought ultimately among nations and not solely through the efforts of any one country . . .”

Stanza 2: “. . . boldly identifies some of the causes of strife: the “search for wealth and power,” the “scorn of truth and right.”. . .”pride of race and station.”. . .”

Stanza 3: “. . . a plea . . . that they “may find release . . . from rattling saber [and the] dread of war’s increase”, or, as we say today, escalating conflict. . .”

Stanza 4: “. . . pleads for a “bright . . . vision” of the cessation of “war . . ., hatred and division . . . where Christ will reign in “truth and justice.”. . .”
